Hand Brake Turn (a program of Concern Australia) seeks to provide disadvantaged young people with accredited 'hands on' training in Motor Mechanics, Spray Painting, Panel Beating, car detailing, workshop safety, OH&S, driver education and interview skills, all working toward a Certificate 1 in Automotive.
Hand Brake Turn has demonstrated for more than a decade that one of the most effective social and crime prevention strategies for at-risk youth is giving young people access to education, training and employment pathways. HBT provides additional supports through trained mentors and links to employment and further education. Their efforts are given special meaning when they give away the car they have worked on through their training to a person in need within our local community, of which they are involved in the decision-making.
YOUNG PEOPLE ARE DRAWN TO HBT BECAUSE:
* It capitalises on their key point of interest
* More practical and less academic approach
* Is a tangible inteaction with realistic results, not a welfare hand-out
* Their hope for a chance in life is rewarded with a new attitude, not just skills
* They can see the worthwhile goals in return for genuine effort
YOUNG PEOPLE BENEFIT BECAUSE:
* They're taught there are no rights without responsibilities and that actions have consquences both positive and negative
* They're taught it's good to give something back
* Big rewards - financial independence
* Good role models and mentors
KEY FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO THE SUCCESS OF THE HBT MODEL INCLUDE:
* Staff who are committed to working with young people, reinforcing boundaries and continuing to encourage, support and teach valuable life skills
* Managers who are committed to their staff, young people and to continuous improvement
* Involvement and partnerships with government, corporate, other service providers, local business and community sectors.
As a creative way forward, HBT has embarked in a Scholarship initiative.
