Don't DIS my Ability - 3rd December 2010
Join in and celebrate International Day of People with a Disability in NSW through the Don't DIS my ABILITY campaign. Inquiries/Campaigns/Disability News

Final Report: Services provided or funded by ADHC
Some of the key recommendations in this report include: the creation of an independent agency to monitor service quality and compliance, handle complaints and manage third party accreditation of disability service providers; the provision of at least $2.5 billion for phase two of Stronger Together; the provision of free interpreter services for people with disability who are from non-English speaking backgrounds and an increase in the number of supported accommodation placements available.


Shut In: Campaign to Close Institutions.
PWD has just launched the first of the first in the series of Vodcasts calling on the NSW government to close all institutions in the state. The Vodcasts (available at http://www.youtube.com/user/ShutInAustralia ) feature different people talking about their experiences with institutions and devolution, and why they support closure.

This is part of the Shut In Campaign which aims to hold the government to account regarding institutionalisation and put an end to the segregation, congregation and isolation of people with disability from the community. Lend your support: http://www.shutin.org.au/


New Clinic for Young People with an Intellectual Disability
The Disability Assessment and Rehabilitation Team for Young People (DARTYP) supports young people with disabilities such as Spina Bifida, Intellectual Disability, Muscular Dystrophy, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Motor Neurone Disease and acquired disabilities such as brain and spinal injuries. They have started a new clinic, held every Tuesday at Concord Hospital. They also hold a clinic every second Thursday of the month at Bowral Hospital. Family Advocacy - Bipartisan government commitment for a Supported Living Fund
The major political parties have agreed that it is time to move NSW from crisis intervention to prevention so that families could plan for the future of their loved ones with disability. NSW CID welcomes this commitment and congratulates Family Advocacy and their supporters on this achievement.


Productivity Commission Inquiry into Long Term Care and Support

International symposium on abuse and neglect of people with intellectual disability

The National Ethnic Disability Alliance (NEDA) is running an online survey aimed at people with a disability from a non-English speaking background, who are not in receipt of the Disability Support Pension. The survey wants to find out if people with a disability from a non-English speaking background have been denied access to services because they did not receive the DSP. The survey is completely confidential. You can find it at www.surveymonkey.com/s/XSWHCFV

Rights Denied
The Disability Studies and Research Institute and People with Disability (PWD) have jointly launched the Rights Denied Report. This project examined the barriers people with cognitive disability encounter that prevent them from realising their human rights to freedom from abuse, neglect and exploitation, and from obtaining appropriate remedies for the violation of these rights. Breaking Down the Barriers: Strategies to Assist Apprentices with a Learning Disability
Apprentices with a learning disability can face significant barriers to completing their training. This paper explores what these apprentices, their lecturers and disability support staff see as the most effective strategies for helping them to overcome these difficulties. Research Workshops for People with Intellectual Disability
The Centre for Disability Studies, the University of Sydney, in conjunction with the Australasian Society for Intellectual Disability (ASID NSW) is presenting a series of 3 workshops (6/12/10, 28/1/11, 18/3/11) in which people with intellectual disabilities and their supporters can learn how to plan and direct inclusive research into matters that interest and concern them. Ability Incorporated Advocacy Service - Training
AIAS is now able to offer fee for service advocacy and related training to areas outside their geographic funding area within NSW. They can train in topics such as: Harassment, Staying Positive, What is Advocacy? Disability Standards, Fall Prevention, Budgeting plus many more. Family Care Workshop
Free for parents of someone with a disability. Hosted by TABISS (Training & Behaviour Intervention Support Service) and presented by Terry Ryan, Author and Parent of an adult with Intellectual disability, this workshop will provide info to parents on managing the challenge of caring for a person with disability. Siblings/Young Carers

Inclusive Community Education Program
Sydney Community College is running specially tailored courses for people with a disability. 2011 NSW HACC & Community Care Conference: Call for Content & Expressions of Interest. The conference will be held at Darling Harbour (2/3 May 2011) and the theme is "The Evolving Face of Community Care - Celebrating the Past and Embracing the Future".. Joint submissions from consumers/carers and service providers that highlight examples of best practice are encouraged. Submissions close 3 December 2010.
