Dads, grandpas, uncles, and other father figures play an important role in children's lives, but they don't always get the attention they deserve.
The Benevolent Society's John Roberts is rectifying that on the Central Coast with a series of Dad's Day Out events.
"I really loved the opportunity to spend some quality time with my son and granddaughter", says Richard who attended the Wyong event on 20 June.
Farm animals, jumping castles and face-painting ensure that the events
are popular with kids. "My boys loved the animals at the Kindy farm. They could not get enough", says Rob from Toukley.
But even more important are stalls stacked with information about local support services, community groups, and volunteer opportunities for the men.
"Many men who come along are unaware that other guys in their community are doing it tough. At Dad's Day Out, they learn that other people have problems, and that they can do something to help", says The Benevolent Society's John Roberts.
Like many attendees, Rob collected information from a variety of stalls. "I am involved with community groups and found the available information a great resource."
John believes that keeping the event light-hearted and fun is the key to its success.
"We had to think of a different way to engage men", says John. "You won't get guys from a rural town to attend an information session on volunteer work - but you will get them to attend a Dad's Day Out."
